Bull Snake As Pet
By Jo on Dec 6, 2007 in Pet Health
Among the snake species, the bull snake is the most common exotic pet. Many people like bull snake as pet because it has beautiful colors and is easy to look after especially if captive breed. Bull snakes are often found in Central North America, South Canada and North Mexico. They choose to inhabit in different areas where there are pinewoods, desert like areas, farm country and river valleys.
Bull snakes are cold –blooded, large snakes that often exceeds 6-feet in length. Their usual colors are yellow, brown, black reddish or a mixture of those in white. Bull snakes use their tongue to smell their prey. They have teeth and bite but are not poisonous. This is their difference from rattlesnake though bull snakes also make hissing sound. Bull snakes kill their prey by squeezing them until it can no longer breathe after that they will swallow the prey whole. Their jaw has stretchy ligaments that can stretch if they will swallow bigger animals than them. Bull snakes usually eat rats, mice, gophers, prairie dog, ground nesting birds and the young of other snakes while they hate hawks and eagles.
Since bull snakes are cold – blooded, they really hate hot temperature, in weather like this they can be seen hiding underground. They are most active by day especially during the morning. This snake can be aggressive when surprised and disturbed but most of them can be handled much better if they are captive breed. If thinking of getting bull snake as a pet, make sure that it is captive breed than captive in the wild. Getting a bull snake from wild can be very much dangerous for other pets in the house and other family members as well.
