Wanting to have pet that are much different from dogs, cat and the like? Many people now are having turtle as their pet. They’re interesting to watch, their slow movements and tough colorful shells may make them seem like the perfect family pet. This animal is very fascinating to children and it is a great way to teach them responsibilities.
Turtles are sophisticated creatures who are cold – blooded and have a potentially long lifespan of 20 – 30 years and can grow up to 12 feet. There are many species of turtles but the most popular species you can keep as pets are Box Turtles, Sliders, Mud Turtles and Painted Turtles.
In order to keep turtles healthy, provide them with equipments and supply that will be needed. A pet turtle is not complicated to care for, but many die as pets because they aren’t treated with care and attention. However turtles have special requirements that need to be fulfilled if they are to live healthy once you bring them home.
If you wish to keep your turtle pet indoor, a huge tank situated in an area where there is constant lighting should be provided for them. In the tank, a land and de – chlorinated water area should be separately provided, keeping them clean every day, these are important for them to survive in your home. Turtles are often omnivorous which means they can eat anything from insects to vegetables though it is important to give them their balance diet through feeding them live fish or worms once a week. But there is a special food for this sort of exotic pet which is expensive but can make your pet turtle really healthy. Give them a clean drinking water. Keep your turtles away from small children or other pets. This pet is not a novelty item, it is a living being, and it is also intelligent enough to know who its friends and enemies are.
Never forget to wash your hands with soap and water after handling your pet turtles to avoid being contaminated with salmonella, though not all turtles have this but for the need of keeping good hygiene just like handling any animals.
It is important to realize that not all household is right for a turtle only individuals willing to commit time, energy and money should consider a turtle for a pet. You need to consider if you will be able to provide all its needs or else it will just die at your home. In choosing turtle as your pet, be sure you know the existing rules of the law regarding having exotic animals as pet, but books regarding taking good care of pet turtle, talk to your vet, surf the net regarding this animal and contact other people who have the same pet to find out the pros and cons. Remember to take care of your pet turtle just like your other pet.
